One of the greatest composers of his period, Claude Debussy (1862-1918) embraced a philosophy toward music that surpassed traditional limits of form and harmony. Throughout his prolific and creative life, he continued to explore these two areas, stretching their boundaries and discovering a wide spectrum of emotion and color in his music. Debussy's extraordinary mastery of fluid lines and intricate harmonies allowed him to paint beautiful pictures of sound. His genius is equally evident in his piano works, in which he strived to emulate the qualities and sonorities of the orchestra.
The wonderful pieces in this collection, compiled and edited by Lynn Freeman Olson, were chosen because they best represent the vast repertoire of Debussy's piano works. Included in this edition is an invaluable glossary of French terms commonly found in the composer's works. Because Debussy was very specific and detailed in his expressive markings, these pieces were carefully edited with devotion to his original intent, making Alfred's edition of Debussy's Selected Favorites extremely accurate and ideal for study.
The French painter Claude Monet (1840-1926), one of the founders of Impressionism, was a contemporary of Debussy. Monet's ability to capture the essence and mood of a scene and his talent for translating these emotions into a visual work of art were both extraordinary and compelling. Monet's painting, Regatta at Argenteuil, was chosen for this cover because, like
Debussy's works, it embodies color, light and harmony with an emotional style that gives its audience a feeling of natural, elegant beauty.
