Johann Burgmuller (1806-1874) was part of a musical family; his father, Johann August, and brother,
Norbert, were also well-known composers. Born in Dusseldorf, Germany, Johann moved to Paris in 1832 where he became known as a fashionable composer of salon pieces. It was there that he developed his trademark light style of playing that delighted the Parisian music lovers.

As a teacher, Burgmuller composed piano studies that have become standard works, some of which appear here in 25 Progressive Pieces. These short, warm and fun-to-play pieces are excellent for students. The simplicity and accessibility of the pieces add to their charm. Carefully and methodically prepared by Willard A. Palmer, this Alfred edition of 25 Progressive Pieces clarifies many of the indefinite dynamic indications found in other editions, improves some of the fingerings, and adds suggestions for pedaling where appropriate.

Like all three of the Burgmullers, master impressionist John Singer Sargent (1 856-1925) was an artist who was held in high esteem during his lifetime. Sargent's Luxembourg Gardens at Twilight was chosen for this cover because, like the music found in 25 Progressive Pieces, its simple, spacious beauty has not only endured, but has gained increasing admiration with the passage of time.
